A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
I don’t know about you, but those words send shivers down me spine. I am an unashamed Star Wars geek. I love the movies, comics, novels, and cartoons. I’ve collected the action figures and even have a soft spot for the two Ewok movies (don’t judge me). So, you can imagine how excited I was to read about the upcoming opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. If you missed the news, the new addition to Hollywood Studios will open on August 29.
The only downside? There’s still five months to go! What’s an aspiring Jedi to do in the meantime? Well, the buzz around the Mos Eisley Cantina is that there’s still plenty to experience at the Star Wars Launch Bay. It’s a must see for any Star Wars fanatic. So, let’s hop a little ride on the Millennium Falcon and let’s take a little tour.
1. What And Where Is It?
The Star Wars launch bay is located at the back of the Animation Courtyard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s part museum, and part interactive experience with things like character meet and greets.
2. Meet and Greets
While visiting the Launch Bay, you can meet a few of your favorite characters in completely immersive environments. Currently you can meet Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, and the ever lovable BB-8. A limited number of Guests are taken into the room, meaning you’ll get the characters all to yourself. Be warned though, Kylo Ren does not suffer fools gladly, and heaven help you if you’re wearing anything suggesting you might be sympathetic to the Rebel cause.
3. Launch Bay Theater
As you enter the Launch Bay, there’s a brief film you can watch in the Launch Bay Theater. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at the films, including conversations with individuals involved in their creation.
4. The Exhibits
For me, the museum pieces are the highlight of the Launch Bay. You can see things like the lightsabers of prominent Star Wars heroes and villains, a reproduction of Boba Fett’s Slave I, speeders, and much more. It’s a self guided walk through, so feel free to take your time as you ogle Anakin’s pod racer.
5. The Mos Eisley Cantina
The Launch Bay also contains a room patterned after the Mos Eisley Cantina. Once upon a time, you could meet the Jawas in this wretched hive of scum and villainy. They’ve since moved on, but you can still grab a picture at the bar.
6. Launch Bay Cargo Shop
Before you leave, there’s a gift shop called the Launch Bay Cargo Shop. It’s full of treasures for the casual or devoted Star Wars fan. There are books, toys, mugs, clothing, and more.
Galaxy’s Edge will be here soon. In the meantime, there’s plenty to sate your appetite at the Star Wars Launch Bay. Only a scruffy nerf-herder would miss it.
